Gilles Peterson

Gilles Peterson was born in Switzerland but grew up in South London. His early encounter with soul music soon had him scouting the capital’s best record shops in search of the vinyl that would make the crowds jump at his first DJ spot – a 14-and under dance at the local church when Gilles was just 15 years old. Playing music by jazz-funk artists such as Light Of The World and Level 42, he hooked up with his friend Andrew and founded the G&A Disco in 1981.
His love of music was not limited to the art of DJing. He was also a keen radio enthusiast, and it was not long before he entered the risky world of the pirate radio, emitting from a DIY shed in his parents’ garden and taking calls from listeners at a phone booth down the road from the local pub. His talents soon caught the eye (or rather ears) of the Invicta crew, the largest pirate radio in London at the time.
The path he had chosen was by then clear. Falling out of college, he spent more and more of his time at record stores like that of DJ Paul Murphy, a star of the jazz dance scene. Murphy gave Peterson the break he was waiting for when he left his regular night to work at a classier joint. The jazz dancers were unable to follow their man due to the new venue’s dress codes, and Gilles quickly found himself mixing for one of the capital’s most creative, inventive and demanding crowds. He developed his ability to juggle with genres during this era.
Alongside his activities as a DJ (not to be missed on Sunday afternoons at Camden’s Dingwalls), Gilles Peterson began to release a series of compilation records entitled ‘Jazz Juice’ in 1985, collaborating with hi-profile labels such as Blue Note, Prestige and Riverside. 1990 was the year of the birth of his Talkin Loud label which has released some of the most cutting-edge artists from House to Jungle and Two Step including Roni Size, MJ Cole and Masters At Work, to name but a few.
His radio show for BBC National Radio 1 ‘Worldwide’ is broadcast from the best in radio across the globe, from Paris’ Radio Nova to Couleur 3 in Lausanne and above all over the internet on the BBC Radio 1 website. A two-hour magical musical journey that is guaranteed to open the minds, hearts and souls of all that listen.
